Information inside the computer is represented in binary form or bits. A bit is mathematically represented by either 0 or l. Long strings of 0's and 1's are fine for computers, but they are rather boring for us. Usually binary strings are converted to octal, decimal, or hexadecimal numbers before results are communicated to us. Thus, knowledge of the conversions between number systems is a crucial issue to understand and remember.
